What is the breakeven point and how is it calculated?

The breakeven point occurs when the base asset used in the structured product reaches a price where the structured product begins to turn a profit.

For a product with a capital protection level of 100%, the breakeven point is the price of the base asset upon purchase, and you will immediately begin to make a profit when the price of the base asset moves in a favorable direction. Products with different levels of capital protection will have different breakeven points.

The breakeven point can be calculated by looking at how far away the price of the base asset is (as a percentage) from the purchase price.

Calculation:

(100% - CPL + Commission) / PR, where:

  • 100%: The percent of the initial investment
  • CPL: Capital protection level
  • Commission: The company's commission for creating the structured product
  • PR: Participation rate

Example:

  • Base Asset (BA) – Apple
  • PR = 0.5
  • CPL = 100%
  • Commission = 2%
  • Price of BA = 110 USD

Calculation:

(100% - 100% + 2%) / 0.5 = 4%

The breakeven point = the price + the result.

The breakeven point = 110 USD + 4% = 114 USD.
